W-VHS is an analog high-definition format. It can switch to an NTSC mode, in which it can record either twice as much high-quality NTSC video or two different video signals. The latter function may be used for 3-D video. Due to its high cost, it never caught on as a consumer format, and, due to its reduced quality, it never caught on as a professional format.
