S-VHS is an industrial variation on the VHS with superior quality and marketed as a high-end consumer format. With S-VHS came a pseudo-component connection system dubbed "S-video", which separates the chrominance and luminance signals, although not as purely as do the true component systems. Standard VHS tapes may be played and recorded on a S-VHS system, but the reverse is not true.
