DESCRIPTION

This was the first commercial high-definition format. It recorded component analog video on 1-inch open-reel tape. At the time it came out, HDTV had 1045 active lines and a 5:3 (15:9) aspect ratio. Although it was a standardized format and considered successful, very few were made and Sony was practically the only manufacturer.
