|
Initially called Recam (recording camera) by Panasonic and Hawkeye by RCA, this format eventually became known as M, based on its SMPTE designation. It was the first component format consisting of two separate signal systems: one for luminance (Y) and another for chroma. The signals were recorded on the tape on separate tracks using separate heads. It was initially designed to use ordinary VHS cassettes.
