This model number was actually applied to two different Sony machines. The first was a competitor to the then-latest version of Ampex Type A. A network white paper began the process of melding features of both Type A and the BVH-1000 into a common, standardized format, which became Type C. Sony's first Type C machines were also called BVH-1000.
