The EV-200 was the first "portable" VTR Sony offered for general use at a cost of approximately $3500. The 1" machine was a monochrome only, full field recorder with stereo sound tracks, but color versions soon followed. To get more tape on a reel and thus allow the recorder to be smaller, the tape hub was made up of three small holes of about a quarter of an inch in diameter. Recordings were made on eight-inch reels running at 7.8 ips resulting in a 63-minute record/ playback time. Tapes made on the EV-200 were compatible with all Sony VTRís in the EV and UV series manufactured into the early 1970s.
